Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 3D printing cost in India?

Cost depends on four things: the process (FDM, resin/SLA, metal, or concrete), the material, the physical size and print time of the part, and the finishing you need (sanding, painting, assembly). There's no single per-gram number that holds across all of those.

  • FDM prototypes are the most economical entry point — suited to functional testing, fixtures and early-stage prototypes.
  • Resin/SLA costs more per part due to material and post-processing but delivers much finer detail — common for jewellery masters, dental models and miniatures.
  • Metal 3D printing sits at the top of the range given machine time, powder cost and required post-processing.
  • Large-format and architectural models are quoted by size, level of detail and finishing (paint, lighting, landscaping elements).

What's the difference between FDM and resin (SLA) 3D printing?

Both build parts layer by layer, but the mechanism, materials, and ideal use cases are different:

  • FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) melts and extrudes a plastic filament. It's faster and more economical for larger parts, functional prototypes, jigs, fixtures, and anything that needs to be tough or load-bearing.
  • Resin/SLA cures liquid photopolymer with light, layer by layer, producing much smoother surfaces and finer detail — ideal for miniatures, dental and jewellery patterns, and presentation models where visual finish matters more than mechanical strength.
  • We also run metal, concrete, and ceramic processes for industrial parts, large-format architectural builds, and specialty applications — happy to recommend the right process once we know what the part needs to do.
Do you deliver 3D printed parts outside Kolkata / pan-India?

Yes. While our studio is based in Jadavpur, Kolkata, we regularly ship completed prototypes, architectural models and production parts to clients across India — we've delivered to industrial manufacturers, architecture firms, schools and government projects well outside West Bengal.

For fragile or large-format pieces (architectural models, art installations) we handle custom packaging and coordinate delivery logistics as part of the project — this gets scoped and confirmed at quote stage.

Can VAP 3D sign an NDA for confidential industrial or product-design projects?

Yes. We regularly work with industrial manufacturers and product-development teams on unreleased designs, so signing a mutual NDA before you share files is standard practice, not an exception. Send us a signed NDA or your standard template along with your project brief and we'll countersign before any files or specifications change hands.

What file formats do you accept?

Standard 3D file formats work directly: STL, OBJ, STEP/STP, and IGES are the most common formats we receive for prototyping and industrial work.

  • If you only have 2D references, hand sketches, architectural drawings, or physical samples, our design team can model the part from scratch as part of the project scope.
  • For architectural scale models, floor plans, elevations, or CAD/BIM exports (e.g. from Revit or SketchUp) are the most useful starting point.

Do you handle bulk or OEM production runs, not just one-off prototypes?

Yes — alongside one-off prototypes, we run small-to-medium batch production for manufacturers and product companies who need repeatable, consistent parts rather than a single sample.

  • We can advise on which process (FDM, SLS/nylon, resin, or metal) is most cost-effective at your target volume — bridge production and injection-mould tooling are very different cost curves, and we'll tell you honestly which makes sense for your quantity.
  • For OEM and industrial clients, we also support design-for-manufacture (DFM) feedback before committing to a full run.
What's your typical turnaround time?

Turnaround depends on part size, process, and finishing — but as a general guide:

  • Small FDM/resin prototypes — typically a few working days from confirmed design.
  • Architectural scale models and large-format builds — longer lead times given size, detailing and finishing; we'll give you a firm date at quote stage.
  • Metal parts and bulk/OEM runs — scoped individually based on quantity and post-processing.
